How To Find A Wedding Caterer

December 23, 2011

Finding a wedding caterer can seem like a complicated process. There are many options for catering a wedding reception, so the best way to start looking for a caterer is to decide on a rough idea of what you want. Do you want an elegant evening affair in a grand ballroom, with passed hors d’oeuvres and a seated dinner? Do you want a fun outdoor reception at a vineyard with a variety of wine pairings during cocktail hour, and a buffet-style spread for dinner? Once you have an idea of what you want your wedding to look like, you can look for a caterer to match!

Start making a list of caterers you think might work. Referrals are a good place to start, your venue can help with recommendations, and you can find local caterers online- their photos and menus will help you determine if it’s worth checking them out further. Next, call the caterers on your list. Ask about pricing, what is included, if they are available on your date, and what their specialties are. This will help you eliminate caterers who are either out of budget, unavailable, or not very helpful.

Once you have narrowed your list down to 3 or 4 caterers, send them a list of menu items you are interested in serving. It doesn’t have to be specific, just an idea. The caterer should propose that you come in for a tasting. At the tasting, you need to find out what the caterer will provide (service, linen, glasses, set up etc) at what price. Ask about specials- some caterers will give you lunch for the wedding party, or an extra appetizer during cocktail hour if you book during the tasting! And of course you will get an opportunity to try their food! The caterer should be upfront with you about costs, how long it takes to set up and clean up, and should provide you with testimonials from other brides or reception venues.

The food is a memorable part of your special day- choose a caterer who listens to your needs and partners with you to make your reception a perfect event!
